Most games we play with dogs come with rules we've created. Fetch means bring the ball back. Tug has a toy and a human on either end. Even obedience commands usually involve us deciding what happens next. But your dog's sense of smell offers another possibility. With dog scentwork games, you create the opportunity, then let your dog figure out the rest. You don't need to show them exactly where to go or how to search. Sometimes the most interesting part is watching your dog develop a solution you wouldn't have thought of yourself.

Think about how much of your dog's day comes with instructions. Come. Wait. Leave it. Drop it. Even when we're thoughtful about giving our dogs choices, we still control most of their world. We know where we're going on the walk. We know what's inside the treat pouch. We know why the doorbell just rang. Then there's dog scentwork.

Here's something nobody tells you when you start shopping for a dog nosework kit: the best beginner kit might already be sitting in your recycling bin. Cardboard boxes. A few treats. A dog with a nose. That's enough to begin.
